The Law of Attraction
Although always a prominent desire in my heart, we never planned to have horses or any animals when we first came to Mallorca. Having farmed sheep and cattle, had dogs, cats and then having small children, it was my intention to reduce my responsibilities and travel more before the children started school.
However, if you believe in the “Law of Attraction”, it was inevitable that at some point we would once again be surrounded by animals, so the travel plan didn’t last too long!
A story I enjoy relating is the one about our dog (half Pastor Mallorquin, half Labrador) Lola.
My son Jamie, who at the time was 4 years old, had returned from a short school excursion in the countryside and told me that they had each made a wish (I presumed a penny had been thrown). When asked what he had wished for he said quite simply, “a puppy”. I had been pining for a dog for some time but was holding on to my decision that now was not the right time; which in retrospect was going against what was in my heart. I asked my innocent son how it would all work. He replied that “it would just happen; a puppy would arrive”.
Literally, the following day we joined our friends in their finca (country home) to celebrate a birthday. On arrival my friend asked “Have you seen the puppies?”. I had no idea that they had had puppies and as my jaw dropped, nine gorgeous black joyous little butterballs came bounding out onto the lawn, each in need of a new home. So, of course, that was that.
Fate had played her hand and Lola, the fattest, cuddliest, furriest of the bunch came home with us a few weeks later. It’s curious how things work out. Lola is 12 years old at the time of writing this, a much loved family dog, quite grey around the muzzle but going strong, and still joins me on all my rides.
