Sa Sort - Unboxing Horses
Based on the teachings of the ethologist Lucy Rees and her research over many years of wild horses in their natural habitat, as well as our personal experience with horses, we now know that the most fundamental needs of all horses, domestic or otherwise are:
Contact with other members of the same species
Communication
Physical comfort based on the freedom of movement
Availability of food at all times, preferably pasture or forage
Sa Sort (Unboxing Horses) in the countryside of Alaró and the Sierra de Tramuntana, offers livery whose principals respect the wellbeing and needs of horses; water and forage are available 24/7, rolling forested terrain providing protection from the elements, free movement for healthy mind and body, company and many other factors.
We believe, being a sociable being, horses must always be in the company of other horses, the more company they have, the better. This environment allows the horse to develop and express his natural behaviour. We don’t just focus on each individual horse, we consider that they are one part of a whole, just as we are. It is for this reason that we take great care of the environment in which they live. That is to say, the land which they inhabit.
We believe that we have the responsibility to also take care of the flora and fauna of the finca as much as we can. We rotate the herd’s access to areas to avoid desertifying the terrain and allow the grass to grow naturally, without insecticides or fertilization and thereby offering only quality grazing. Water points are strategically placed throughout the finca ensuring that there is at no time a lack of water and to attract other species, be they birds, reptiles, insects and other mammals, which enriches the land. In this way we create a small ecosystem.
We don’t have the usual facilities of an equestrian center; we focus on what nature offers us. The Ruta de la Pedra en Sec, GR221, passes right next to our finca, you will find beautiful views, places to have picnics, long routes without traffic. From here you have a wide variety of routes offering the opportunity to improve both physically and mentally.
“Inside every domestic horse is a feral one with the same certainty about how life should be lived.” - Lucy Rees. Horses in Company, 2017.
